The second dialogue under our dialogue series entitled ‘navigating global polycrisis: ideas for democratic and transformative multilateralism, that unpacks South Africa’s G20 presidency and its themes of solidarity, equality, and sustainability that underpin the need for fair treatment, equal opportunities, and the collective responsibility for multilateralism to survive and thrive. As it stands, the U.S. inheritance of the G20 presidency in 2026 and its current criticism of these themes (and general scepticism towards multilateralism) point to a difficult road ahead.
