A just transition agenda for South Africa’s agriculture sector

Deadline: 25 February 2024

Introduction

Anthropocentricity has resulted in a conceptualisation of the right to food without any consideration of planetary boundaries and the ecological impacts of food production. As a consequence, food production in the form of industrial agriculture is one of the major contributors to the climate crisis with high carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide emissions. The global food system is now responsible for 21% to 37% of annual greenhouse gases globally (Lynch et al. 2021). Agriculture is the leading cause of biodiversity loss (Dudley and Alexander 2017).

South African agriculture is dominated my medium and large-scale commercial farms that contribute a significant proportion of the country’s CO2 emissions. These farms also consume over 60% of the country’s freshwater supply. With South Africa embarking on a revision process to significantly improve its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) within the Conference of the Parties processes, it is time to increase work around a just transition for the agriculture sector.
